The Academy hosted its third Wedding Trendsetter Interview this week with the fabulous Kristin Banta and we had a great chat about thoughtful event design, transcending trends and styled shoots. It is one not to miss and you can watch the replay on our YouTube Channel or any of our Facebook pages. For those of you who missed it, here is a quick summary.

When it comes to designing a wedding, or any event, Kristin’s advice is to think beyond a colour palette and a theme, no matter what the objective is. It doesn’t matter whether it is a corporate event or a wedding, there is always a brand story that is at the root of it. For a couple the brand story is the story of all the things they love.

To produce an event that reflects a couple’s brand story you need to ask certain questions. What should the guests experience? What should they feel and how do you communicate that? Once you know the answers to these questions the story can be told visually, by what the guests are tasting, touching, feeling and seeing. For Kristin a successful event is measured by guests leaving with a memory, an experience and having felt something.

I asked Kristin how you take a trend and give it a unique interpretation and for her the biggest challenge is trying to transcend a trend with each individual client and go beyond it. Again she asks questions. Where does your client exist within that trend? What in that trend represents them? Once you know the answers, that trend can be morphed and pushed and pulled, to have a unique spin. The trend then becomes indicative of the client’s brand story.

As for what we are going to see trend wise in 2017 we talked about the continued evolution of mixing things up, from metallics to seating, but in particular the use of bold colour with couples taking bigger risks with colour in a more interesting, luxurious, elevated implementation.

We also heard from Kristin that we are leaving behind the Bohemian look to a more sophisticated look with a residential feel. We are moving away from the traditional approach and florals are being replaced by residential decor, which is exciting.

Kristin advised us to think of event design like a house. First we build a house, then we decide what colours are going on the walls, what furniture to put into it and finally we decide what to put on the coffee table. The house and the decor will lend itself to that final touch, that is indicative of the story and the landscape that has been created. its no different when designing events. Essentially we are working towards a less formulaic approach and towards a more residential feel.

To hear more from Kristin you need to watch our full interview below, and Kristin is one of the contributors of the Trend Report so you’ll be able to read her full predictions there. Don’t forget to subscribe to get your free copy of the report once it publishes on the 4th of January, 2017.
